Cell imaging demands molecular probes that are luminescent as well as biocompatible. Heavy metal atoms having unique d- electronic configurations possess the characteristics of an ideal fluorophore. Hence, this project aims to establish a library of biocompatible fluorescent molecules that could be coordinated to heavy metal atoms to form complexes. The complexes are characterized in terms of their photophysical properties. Further, they are conjugated to nanoclusters and the resulting molecular architectures are investigated for their efficiency in cell imaging.
